Tips for Choosing a Life Insurance Company

Monday, March 31st, 2008

More than 150 insurance companies offer thousands of life insurance products in the UK.Choosing the right company and right product from this bewildering choice is challenging. Fortunately, there are some common sense guidelines that will help you narrow the field to a more manageable selection of companies and products.Looking at the CostThe UK life insurance business is highly competitive, but the industry tries to avoid price competition whenever possible. Instead, companies attempt to make their products sufficiently different from their competitors so that price is less of a factor in product selection. However, there are ways you can keep your premium rates to a minimum without affecting the quality of your cover.Consider Term Life Insurance - Term Life Insurance is the cheapest form of life cover available and premiums are very competitive.Shop around - in particular, if you know exactly what type of cover you require and dont need advice, you can reduce your premiums by applying through a discount life insurance broker such as Life Saver. These broker’s discount the insurance companies standard premiums by rebating the majority of the commission paid to them as an agent for the company. This reduces your monthly payments below the premium you would pay by applying direct to the insurance company.Stop smoking - premium rates for smokers are 30-40% higher than for non-smokers. If you can or are thinking of quitting you will save hundreds on your premiums over the term of the policy.Only pay for the cover you need - If you are looking for term insurance and critical illness, you can make big savings by buying a combined policy. These only pay out one lump sum rather than the two that separate policies would pay, if you suffer a critical illness and then die.Obviously, the cost of monthly premiums is going to be a major factor in your choice of insurer but, it should not be your only consideration.Product QualityThere can be major differences between UK life insurance policies so it is important that you compare like with like and check the small print. This is particularly important if you are including extras such as Critical Illness Cover. Always read the Key Facts document carefully and look for some of the following benefits:Are the premiums Guaranteed? This means the premiums are guaranteed to remain the same throughout the term of your policy. This is opposed to `Reviewable premiums which, as the name suggests, are reviewed usually every 5 years and can increase dramatically.Check that the policy has terminal illness benefit included. This is a valuable extra which is now included in most Term Life Insurance policies for free and will pay the life insurance amount early if you suffer a terminal illness. Can the policy be written in trust? This will avoid any delay in the money going to your dependants and the risk of inheritance tax being charged on the benefit. Can waiver of premium benefit be included in your plan. This is a valuable extra which, if you become too ill to work for a number of months, will ensure your cover continues without you having to pay the premiums.Claims HistoryNo matter how good the policy it will all be for nothing if your insurer is difficult or obstructive if you should have to make a claim. The industry pays out over 166 million a day in pension and life insurance claims and all insurers have procedures in place to process claims on their policies. Before taking out a policy it is advisable to contact your prospective insurer and ask about their claims history. Note their willingness to provide this information and the attitude promoted by their response. Do they look for reasons to pay claims or excuses to avoid them?Financial StrengthWhen selecting or evaluating a UK life insurance company, a logical place to begin is by reviewing the ratings given by major insurance company rating services such as Standard & Poors and AM Best. In a rating, the rating company or agency expresses its opinion of the life insurance companies financial condition.Copyright UK Life Insurance Company Indexhttp://www.uk-insurance-index.co.uk. MLS: Starts From Inception

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

Which players started the most consecutive games for their respective MLS teams from the beginning, the franchise’s first game? There are two ways to look at this, league matches only (aka regular season) or all competitions. Both lists are below (only the top player for each team is listed).

Jim Brennan is the last man standing for Toronto FC, having started all 17 of their games so far. That’s only good enough to tie for 13th in both categories, and he’s one yellow away from suspension. So catching up to Mark Chung is extremely unlikely.

No more sacred cows.

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

It’s a bizarre time to be living in Washington DC. Ahead of next year’s presidential election, and amid a firestorm of criticism surrounding the war in Iraq, the political mud-slinging has gotten ugly, with half the government facing the prospect of being ousted in ‘08.

It’s a regime change of sorts. Visible on the horizon, but still shrouded in uncertainty. The city’s oldest, richest power gluttons have started trembling in their boots.

Of course no one wants to be associated with the Bush administration — the further distance from the president the better. But with both parties guilty of trumpeting the war in its early stages, and in the absence of any kind of viable exit strategy, PR machines are working overtime to dig up scandals where they can be found.
Take Wolfie for example…

Or Gonzalez, or Libby, or the lesser known Randall Tobias.

In the years immediately following 9/11, with support for the US-led wars in Afghanistan and Iraq at an all-time high, it seemed the military was one of the only institutions that was somehow haram to criticize. Support Our Troops, they told us.

And as recently as November, Senator John Kerry — still considered a Democratic golden boy at the time — created a media stir by suggesting that the troops were uneducated. Or at least that’s how Fox News spun it. Kerry’s camp attempted damage control by saying the comment was intended as a joke. It was good excuse, and perhaps a truthful one, but it went down as political suicide nonetheless.

Fast-forward to today. The latest casualty of so-called troop-bashing is not a Washington politician (though both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are taking heat for voting against the latest incarnation of the Iraq war spending bill.)

Instead conservative pundits will spend their Memorial Day holiday toasting the downfall of a media powerhouse. She’s probably one of the only talk-show hosts in history to actually improve a network’s television ratings, and still be sent heading for the hills.

I’m of course talking about Rosie O’Donnell.

After more than eight months of loud-mouthed political commentary that added some much-needed relevance to The View, it was O’Donnell’s statements about the Iraq war that apparently crossed the line:

O’DONNELL: I just want to say something. 655,000 Iraqi civilians are dead. Who are the terrorists?
HASSELBECK: Who are the terrorists?
O’DONNELL: 655,000 Iraqis — I’m saying you have to look, we invaded –
HASSELBECK: Wait, who are you calling terrorists now? Americans?
O’DONNELL: I’m saying if you were in Iraq, and the other country, the United States, the richest in the world, invaded your country and killed 655,000 of your citizens, what would you call us?
HASSELBECK: Are we killing their citizens or are their people also killing their citizens?
O’DONNELL: We’re invading a sovereign nation, occupying a country against the U.N.
“655,000 Iraqi civilians have died. Who are the terrorists?”
Critics jumped all over this one. On Wednesday the sh*t hit the fan when O’Donnell called her co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck “cowardly” for not saying anything in her defense.
“Do not call me a coward, because number 1, I sit here every single day, open my heart and tell people what I believe,” Hasselbeck retorted.
Their catfight continued despite failed attempts by their co-hosts to cut to commercial.
So much for the liberal media. The next day O’Donnell was gone.

If Americans are ever going to wake up to the reckless, exploitative reality of US foreign policy in the Middle East, it’s time to drop the social taboos, to let the debate go on uncensored.

It’s time for a reality check. No more sacred cows.

EaterWire: Birdbath Angers Cookie-Eating Community & More!

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

EAST VILLAGE—A cookie scandal’s baking in the East Village. We hear that “Birdbath” might have, for reasons unknown, discontinued their much-beloved “reverse chocolate chip cookie.” A fan’s diatribe, “When I read that the Build a Green Bakery/Birdbath would be baking all the product for the new West Village outpost, I was worried how this might affect the inventory at the original, First Ave. location. Little did I know what horrors awaited. Sometime last week, Birdbath ceased production of their legendary reverse chip cookies (chocolate cookie w/ white chocolate chunks). These things are far superior to the regular chocolate chip cookies, and way WAY superior to the suprisingly-kinda-shitty oatmeal raisin ones. The reverse cookies were replaced by chocolate cookies w/ dark chocolate chips. The clerk didn’t know when the reverse cookies would be back, so we stopped by again Sunday night. Still no luck. When prodded for an explanation, he looked defeated and said, “I know, everyone is asking about them. I really need to sit down, think things through and get some answers.” Can’t begin to explain how bummed the Upper East Village is about this. It should be noted that the new cookies are good, though. But not AS good.” [EaterWire]

UPPER EAST SIDE—Restaurateur Stephen Hanson is, apparently, not an animal lover. A reader writes, “What’s up with BR guest restaurants and there sidewalk seating policy? No dogs allowed? C’mon, this is a joke. My dog was urinating in the same area 2 days ago and now we can’t enjoy a drink outside. I am referring to both Atlantic grill and 3rd ave Dos Caminos. Why this ridiculous policy? An example was that my dog was in a bag not making a peep and some jerk employee from Atlantic grill ran up a said “I know you have a dog in that bag” I thought “who cares I’m sitting outside”, wrong! We were not able to sit outside so maybe you can ask someone over there “what’s there freaking deal”. Please post this on your website so animal owners are aware.” A bit extreme, but in this time of rampant DOH shutdowns, we’d wager that the man’s just being cautious. [EaterWire Inbox]

NOLITA—Speaking of which, we’ve got another rumored DOH closure. A tipster emails the following, “bahn mi so 1, the place on broome near mott, is closed ostensibly because the proprietors are on vay-kay (i don’t have any photos because i assumed it was the truth, and also because i don’t have a digital camera). but my friend who also frequents the place told me that they are in fact shuttered by the DOH, and have since pulled down the metal grille thinger to hide the DOH ’scarlet letter’.” [EaterWire Inbox]
RED HOOK—The ballfield vendors are officially back. Chowhounders ventured down yesterday afternoon; apparently only a few vendors had shown up, though more are expected this coming weekend. [Brooklyn Record]

MIDTOWN WEST—Yet another restaurant-related lawsuit is making news: A former waiter at Times Square’s B. B. King Blues Club & Grill is suing the restaurant. Apparently, Radiante, the company that owns the B. B. King as well as Heartland Brewery and City Hall, took the cost of dash-and-dine bills out of servers’ paychecks. Not only illegal, but highly immoral. [Cutlets]

“Balls”

Monday, March 17th, 2008

With regard to how women use comedy to either subvert and / or redefine norms and whether comedy is a useful tool . . . ? Yes, women like men have their own unique perspective when it comes to humor. A lot of comedy, whether delivered by a man or a woman is a shared experience by everyone. If you’re going to a comedy club to be entertained I doubt that people care if the line up includes a woman or two. I’m guessing it doesn’t generally matter as long as that person can make you laugh.
I think comedy is an equalizer. Women comedy performers and women writers are less sexualized, more attended to for their talent. Making people laugh is a good way to get peoples attention too. Women comedians can say something that is politically charged or scandalous without ruffling too many feathers as long as they are making people laugh. They may even get the message that is being conveyed through the joke.

I chose, Leslie Ball as my favorite woman comedian. I wouldn’t say she is my favorite, however I do admire what she has done for the Twin Cities performing community for the last 13 years. She herself is a musician and comedian. She started, “Balls Cabaret”, or “Balls” some 13 years ago to support the community of artists by giving them a venue (The Southern Theater every Saturday at midnight) to perform their art, whatever that maybe. She’s known for her generousity.
She said during an interview in the St. Paul Pioneer Press that “Balls” is, “For artists of any and all disciplines to do whatever they want for five to seven minuets. Nothing is screened or censored.” In the same interview she also said, “It’s one thing to have success in business, but another to change the way business is done.”

A picture of young Kurt Vonnegut that I stole from a German Web site.

Word reached the compound today of the passing of Kurt Vonnegut. While this can hardly be called a tragedy (Vonnegut lived 84 long, long years) or a surprise (he spoke often of committing suicide, both passively — by cigarette — and actively), still, it’s…something.

One might be tempted to ask how someone so severely depressed could create such beauty, humor, and humanity. Or conversely how someone capable of creating such beauty, humor, and humanity could be so severely depressed. But the two seem to go hand-in-hand so often that it doesn’t even surprise me anymore.

No time for any in-depth consideration of Vonnegut’s work and life today; others will be taking up that task (Cecil?). But I wanted to take just a moment to say goodbye, thanks, and God bless you, Mr. Vonnegut.

(P.S.: For memorial listening, might I recommend the song “Nice, Nice, Very Nice,” by Ambrosia? Look it up.)

To Be Clutch or Not To Be Clutch

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

Wikipedia defines a clutch hitter as a baseball player with a knack for coming up with the “big” hit. The big hit is typically a game-deciding hit, sometimes a home run, often coming with two outs. Being known as a clutch hitter is a position of high honor and responsibility, as the clutch hitter is recognized as the “go-to guy” for the team, and his exploits in pressure situations are celebrated by both fans and players alike.

Pretty straightforward, right? Not really. I would tend to agree with Bill James and other statheads that clutch hitting does not exist. I will take it a step further to add another dimension and say that people can shrivel up and lose their ability to perform. While some people simply may not be able to take the pressure and perform up to their abilities during stressful situations, others simply perform at their established levels.

“How is it that a player who possesses the reflexes and the batting stroke and the knowledge and the experience to be a .260 hitter in other circumstances magically becomes a .300 hitter when the game is on the line? How does that happen? What is the process? What are the effects? Until we can answer those questions, I see little point in talking about clutch ability.”

The thought process is that if someone really did play better in clutch situations, the GM would be pretty interested to know why said clutch player is not playing as well in non-clutch situations. Disinterested? Not likely. Needing the pressure to perform? Can someone really gain ability in this type of situation? Aren’t the players most cited for being clutch in guys like Jeter, Mariano, Ortiz, etc. just better on a per-game basis than most others and continue to do what is expected of them which is perform? Last I checked, most clutch performers were superstars anyway. I’m not talking about guys like Scott Brosius or Kirk Gibson who certainly came up with big hits, but guys regarded for their clutch ability over a long period of time.

It’s really a tricky question because of other factors like the pitcher maybe not being able to continue to perform at the same levels due to not handling stress as well. Also, I’m sure you can spew stats that prove that this guy has hit .500 in close late and .400 in the playoffs, but to that I would just point out sample size. Generally, if you go back long enough and look at a large enough body of work, you would assume that for the most part, a player’s stats would be consistent with his career states whether you looked at when the bases were empty or whether there were bases loaded.

Why don’t we take a look at Mr. Clutch and New York’s own Derek Jeter. If we go use the always informative ESPN splits from ‘04 through ‘06 and isolate the situations we would typically deem as clutch, we can see how much he deviates from his three year average in each of those situations:Overall AVG OBP SLG
Bases Loaded 13% 25% 4%
Close and Late (8%) 1% (8%)
Men On, 2 out (3%) 5% (6%)
On Second (18%) (4%) (10%)
On Third 27% 12% 15%
Runners On 2% 4% (4%)
Scoring Position (2%) 5% (1%)
Scoring Posn, 2 out (4%) 8% (2%)
Second and Third (13%) (2%) (31%)What do we see? For the most part, minor variances. There were more situations when he ‘choked’ and he technically performed under his true abilities (however so slightly) and there were less situations when he was ‘clutch’ and performed over his true abilities. In the ones where there are greater variances, you have to take into account sample size. If he had gotten two less hits with the bases loaded and four less hits with runners on third, he would be would be in line with his three year average of batting average. Maybe instead of proving a player is clutch, people should be more concerned with said player simply playing up to their abilities during times of stress rather than slinking away.

What is my point? One of the biggest problems with the Mets right now is getting guys hits when they need to. Basically, the Mets have had an extreme lack of clutch hits, but I am confident the Mets will be alright. The law of averages tells me so in conjunction with past performance. Baseball is a series of streaks both good and bad. Outside of Moises Alou, not many people give you the same thing day in and day out. While some guys have greatly underperformed when it counts for the Mets this season, it is hard to believe that things will not improve.

If you look at past performances, we know that the Mets team is not full of guys that shrivel in the face of high pressure situations. Reyes, Wright, and Beltran are the same guys who hit .414, .358, and . 310 with runners in scoring position with two outs last year. They have done it before and though they may not be ‘clutch’ for the rest of the year, I can say with a reasonable amount of certainty they will more likely perform to their abilities during those high leverage situations than continue down the path they are headed right now. If the Mets pitching can hold up and their bullpen can continue to perform like they have, something tells me this team will make a move and create some space.

* * *
The daily Pedro update and this time brought to you buy Steve Popper:

Pedro Martinez was expected back a few days ago after taking a breather in the Dominican Republic. But according to a Mets official, he remained there to do his bullpen session Tuesday and is expected back in Port St. Lucie later this week.

I know the buzz around is that Pedro’s break from rehab raises red flags (another mention about it again today, but I’m too lazy to find the link again), but we cannot forget what Will Carroll had said back on July 6th.

When a success is followed by ten days off, people get confused. Pedro Martinez threw a great simulated game and now moves into a new phase of rehab, one where he goes from strengthening for function to conditioning for action. Pitching is a very specific activity and while Martinez has certainly been preparing for that during his shoulder rehab, it’s a different process to actually get ready to pitch—saying that he’s “doing spring training” is a vast oversimplification. It’s a different process altogether, so while it is counterintuitive for him to take off time to “recharge” (as the Mets are calling it), it’s the accepted move. More than anything else, the Mets are making sure that they do this right.

Do not buy into the sensationalism coming out of the media. Something could be wrong of course since his comeback has been mostly shrouded in mystery, but I’ll side with Will Carroll on this one.

Speaking of clutch players, Darling said that The Duque seemingly needs the spotlight to perform and cited that as the reason he is thriving in New York and has thrived in the playoffs vs. places like Arizona. Now I do not necessarily buy into that, but I agree with Willie that The Duque is a competitor.

“Not only the stolen base,” Hernandez said through an interpreter. “Even at the plate. Anything you can do to help the team win a ballgame, you’ve got to do it.”

Said manager Willie Randolph: “He’s just a competitor, man. I love his energy and his fight. He forces you to play the game. He just loves to compete. If you don’t pay attention to him, it’s almost insulting to him.”

Some guys are complacent and go through the motions but The Duque is 100% not one of those guys.

It seems like David Wells broke out a knuckle ball against the Mets.

Mr. Neyer goes over one of my pet peeves….retiring numbers. I get why teams do it as the ultimate way to honor players, but that should be their choice and not the league’s. I think Jackie Robinson should be honored for what he meant to the game as should many players, but I’m not 100% sure the way to do it is telling another player they can no long wear that number. Great gesture, not sure it is the best idea. Jackie Robinson Day was an amazing event and the more appropriate way to go about raising awareness. But now since it was done for Robinson, the Clemente camp and the Ruth camp are asking for the same treatment and want #3 and #44 retired for all of baseball. If a team wants to do it, great. They Yankees retired 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 23, 32, 37, 42 (Robinson and soon to be Rivera), 44, and 49. On the way will be 46, 20, 2, 13 (if he stays), and possibly Clemens’ 22.

That’s 21 numbers and that is a lot of numbers and they will be in triple digits soon, but the MLB should stay out of it and work on other ways to honor past greats. I truly think there are better ways to honor people…and don’t ask me I have not given it much thought. Regardless, it should entirely be up to the team, but even then, I’m not a big fan. Why can’t you simply hang numbers with names and still let the numbers be worn? Whatever, minor gripe here that has no large bearing on the game at all, but still a gripe worth mentioning.

Random thought…isn’t it weird that a team that has been struggling all year to hit never went out for early BP? For that fact alone, Rick Down should have been let go. Way to think outside of the box Rick-o!

Keith Law says he would trade Hughes before Joba. The Yankees have two guys that look like potential #1’s while the Mets supposed aces to be have been struggling. Humber gets a pass, but he should be straightening out in the second half if he wants to suppress some of the criticisms.

Law also responded to his disappointing scouting report on Deolis.

Lenny (Villanova, Pa): Keith, in an article following the future’s game, you criticized Deolis Guerra. Two questions relating to that: 1) Was that the first time you’ve seen Guerra? 2) Your reports said his FB was a lot of 87-88, but BA had him at 93-94. Why the discrepancy? Thanks.

SportsNation Keith Law: (1:16 PM ET ) Just to be clear, I didn’t criticize Guerra. I gave a report on him, and it wasn’t glowing, but that’s not the same as criticizing the kid. That was the first time I’d seen him, yes. I have no idea where BA got its velocities; I didn’t see anyone with them in the scouts’ section, which is where I was sitting with the radar gun.

Not sure who is telling the truth here.

Mr. Law also likes Milledge.

Lenny (Villanova, Pa): Have you seen Milledge play since he has been up? Do you think he is here to stay this time, and do you think the hype is deserved?

SportsNation Keith Law: (1:29 PM ET ) I never understood how his stock fell as quickly as it did. He’s going to be an above-average corner outfield bat, with good defense.

He also said the top GMs were Dombrowski, Melvin, Shapiro, Minaya, and Beane (not necessarily in any order).

Jim Callis’ chat was definitely Yankee-centric, but we did get a Brandon Efferson question.

Greg (New York): Will the Mets sign Efferson?

SportsNation Jim Callis: (2:40 PM ET ) Wow, a Brandon Efferson question. He’s a little pitcher from Louisiana with big stuff, and yes, I bet he signs before the deadline. Call it a gut feel.

As I stated before, even if they have to overpay, they need to get this kid. They need some live arms and his upside is huge.

..and…

Mike(NY): Lightning round- Martinez, Gomez, Milledge, Tabata?

SportsNation Jim Callis: (2:42 PM ET ) I’ll be difficult and still say Milledge.

Looks like Milledge is getting some love from the chat people today. I still see a .300+ batter with 20+ homers, 20+ steals, and solid defense during his peak.

The Red Sox agree with me and believe Lowell would be the wiser pickup for the Red Sox. Not because Lowell is better or even in the same universe as A-Rod, but it just boils down to Lowell’s production, glove, and oodles of extra money to spend elsewhere. Fiscal responsibility is not exactly a bad thing.

I can see Dye being a little upset up when Vazquez was extended while he was not, but after sucking for a half a season in a big way he was upset when Buehrle was extended and he was not. Interesting…

Vick deserves to go to jail for a long, long time. No matter how rich you are, you apparently cannot buy intelligence.

The government’s case includes evidence that Vick and his cohorts “tested” pit bulls for ferocity. If the dogs failed the test, the indictment charges, they were executed by hanging or drowning. In one case, with Vick present, the indictment says a dog was slammed to the ground until it was dead. In another incident, a dog was soaked with a hose, then electrocuted. Those aren’t the sort of transgressions that lead to probation and community service. It’s the kind of behavior that results in punishment, and the punishment will be jail time.

I know killing animals is not on par with humans, but that type of behavior should be held in serious regard. I have not read anything about projected time in the klink, but at this point, five years would not be nearly enough and he should be banned from the NFL for life. Of course, I’m not saying he is guilty, but he has been indicted and the prosecution percentage is 95% according to another ESPN article and said they would not be indicting him if the case was not strong. He is still innocent at this point, but it is not looking good. I wonder what happens to his $130 million contract if convicted?

The Braves confirm everyone’s suspicsions that they are going for it by signing Julio Franco. Lookout…he might weakly pepper whoever is playing second base with plenty of double play balls. We are all quaking in our boots here above the Mason-Dixon Line.

Anytime the Mets defense wants to start helping out John Maine, they can feel free to begin.

Check out Toasty’s site as I have some prospect talk going on over there….but I shouldn’t have to remind you to check his site, right?

The Dark Tower

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

Twenty years ago, when visiting my grandparents in Charleston, South Carolina, I bought The Dark Tower from Pitt Street Pharmacy. This trade paperback was the first Stephen King book I ever read, and I’ve been a fan ever since.

And even though King finished The Dark Tower series, I found myself buying another telling of Roland’s tale yesterday. Marvel Comics is releasing a seven part Dark Tower series, and the first issue came out this week. If you like Stephen King and/or comic books, it’s well worth buying.

New SplashHall Poetry Paparazzo - SplashScribe Soft Words Interviews The Lovely Splash Poetress Brenda Cook AKA Nixon

Monday, March 10th, 2008

Hiya everyone. I’m your new SplashScribe. I don’t know if I’m as good as Shoesie or Rg, but I think I’ll get better.

I started off having fun with Brenda Nixon Cook aka Nixon, our Environmental Scientist who loves cats. We’ll be careful not to tell her husband, but Tommy, her nineteen year old cat, is the true love of her life. With her droll sense of humor, her exceptionally sensitive writes that touch a cord somewhere deep within, and her warm appreciation and suggestions, Brenda brings the freshness of her garden to these busy halls.

SW: What brought you and your daisy to SplashHall?
Nix: My Daisy blew in with the wind, I however came at the urging of my friend Balladeer, who said that it was “friendly place”, where you could feel at home.

SW: What keeps you Splashing around?
Nix: Because it is a friendly place, where I can feel at home, except that I don’t throw my clothes over the chair, or raid the fridge, or leave books and papers in every room. I like the companionship of the other writers, and I like to see how the creative process works for other individuals. The poetry is a huge draw for me, I like to read others work, it gives me insight into the creative process, and very rarely do I read a poem, that I do not find something that resonates with me as a reader. The feedback, I mean where else am I going to get honest feedback, my home audience is pretty limited, my husband says that’s “good honey, whats for supper?”, my teenager rolls her eyes and says, “well if you like it, can we go to the mall?”, and my best friend loves everything I write. My 6 cats they are the real critics. If I find it shredded in the cat box, I take that as the highest of compliments.

SW: Your favorite forum(s)?
Nix: I like the Axe and the Genuine Poetry and Prose forum. I like the axe because you get honest feedback, I have an awful time with revisions, because I think every ones comments are good, and some contradict each other, and then I never sure which way is better, and I then become paralyzed, and then disgusted with myself, and I end up either never getting to a final revision, or make next to no changes at all. I think I will get better as I become more confident in my own writing and start to trust my own muse.

I like the poetry and prose, because I consider it a “sharing” or “showcase” forum, where you can read what others are working on, post poems you write that might not be from your natural voice, and just visit and read others works and share in their writing and work.

I also like the wax, as just yesterday, I tried my first “zen” poetry and you can post friendly competitions, like the one Ecphrasis, which was a result of a bet between Balladeer and myself.

SW: Any favorite Splashers (besides me… lolol)?
Nix: Well you… Like I said before “Splash” was a friendly place and everyone has made me feel right at home. Poets are like poems, I find something to like about most everyone. My friend Balladeer, is my sounding board, we both came from another forum, and I often send him my stuff, before I screw up enough courage for the axe. Honestly my friend Balladeer, Mojave, Soft Words (you know her right), Kay, Sampo, SeaSpirit, Dodjie, Sabine, Witt and Dublinsteve have commented on my poems the most, so I have connected with them more often. Mojave always includes a famous poem with his critiques, and I look forward to the poem, I learn by his example. Shropshire Lad, has been helping with the “Zen” and “Concrete” poetry, which I surprisingly like.

SW: When did you get bitten by the writing bug?
Nix: Initially as soon as I could read, maybe 2nd or 3rd grade, then in Jr. High and High School, I was on the school newspaper. In Jr. High I was the editor, isn’t that funny, considering how awful my punctuation skills are. In High School, I took Journalism for three years and served as the news editor, but quit my senior year, because I could not fit in all of my science classes, with my electives. I had to choose between either my 4th year of Agriculture or my 4th year of Journalism, so the cows won. ” I believe in the future of farming with a faith born not of words but of deeds”.

I went to college, studied Chemistry, wrote tons of poetry on the side… like a movie “Poetry on the Side”. I have poems from that period, that were written on the margins, of lab papers, calculus papers, napkins, etc.. and them sometime around 1986, I just quit. I took the road most traveled. Graduated college, got married, grew up, and for the most part, wrote very little, a few short stories, some essays, a couple starts on different novels. When my friend died this summer, I wanted to find a picture that was taken of the two of us, and I dug through the boxes in the garage, and in one of the boxes there were probably 200 or more of my poems, written from 1976 to 1985 (13 to 22). I collectively call them “Poems from the Cardboard Box”, I started to type them up for my daughter, most are teenage angst stuff, some in my early 20s are not too bad, some are awful, my favorite are the political ones I wrote on the Reagan years. The process of taking all of these scribbles, notes, margins, must of woken up my sleeping muse and she has been stalking me ever since. My muse is stalker, a damn bossy, know it all, kind of stalker, maybe she is a conglomerate of all of my worst traits, except she makes all of the competing noise go away, so the tiny quiet voice inside gets a chance to create, so in that I have to thank her, but most of the time she just stalks me, at work, at home, in my sleep, until I finally put that random thought to paper.

SW: Has your writing improved/changed since your myriad Ax-periences?
Nix: Practice makes perfect, yes? I think so but not from my writing, but by example, from the reading of others work, for the exploration of others creativity. The reading of other voices, the discovery of voice, I am still finding my voice, my focus, I am not there yet. There are so many others who I believe speak with a clear resonant voice, who I long to write more like. I think as we read others work, out own voice gets stronger, and it is the collection of the work from any period of time that gives the most accurate picture of that time. We all need to speak in our own distinct voice, and it is the blending of the voices or of the instruments that make the sweetest sounds. Sorry for my soapbox….my husband tells people that I am only 5′2′ without my soapbox.

SW: Favorite authors/poets (outside Splash)?
Nix: Poets - Robert Frost, E.E.Cummings, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Authors - Tom Robbins, Anne Tyler, Robin Cook , Ellen Gilchrist, Barbara Kingsolver, Jimmy Buffett, and I am a closet ” Historical Romance” reader, especially those with a mystic overview like the “Highlander” Series by Karen Marie Moning ( I guess I just came out of the Closet).

SW: What do you think are the strongest influences on your writing (besides the Ax)?
Nix: My writing comes from inside, it is more an internal expression and less of an observation, so that being the case, I suspect my own life experiences have had the greatest influence on my writing. I am a doubting Thomas sort of personality, and have a strong personal faith, that I myself continually question and reaffirm. I believe all living things are connected and that in each of us resides the ability for great good and great evil. I am fascinated by the human experience, and our place in the circle, and in the connections within the circle.

SW: What are your other interests, hobbies and passions?
Nix: My daughter is the bonus in life I didn’t think I would get, she is the best and worst of both me and my husband, she drives me crazy, but I think she is near as perfect as anything I have ever done. I like to garden and photography. I like the satisfaction of planting something and watching it grow. I feel connected to the dirt and the environment. I feel my place in the universe is pretty insignificant and I am happy there. I am happiest when I am gardening, reading or writing, and being with those I love the most. I am a environmental scientist in my real life, and have an almost tangible connection to nature, I am most happy when the circle is complete. When I die, I am looking forward to being worm food and compost for the next living thing. Check out my pictures of my garden at http://photo.xanga.com/rachaelsmom915

SW: What are your poetic ambitions like?
Nix: For my writing to make a connection that positively impacts another. Oh and I would love that Pulitzer (hahahaha).

SW: Describe yourself in less than ten words.
Nix: curious (my family would call it nosey)
left of center
optimistically cynical (aka smart ass)
intelligent
reverent

SW: If I were a genie in a bottle, and offered you three wishes, which ones would you want? (be honest, and don’t you say world peace unless you really mean it)
Nix: I would wish for world peace, except how long would it last, before human nature screwed it up, so what do I really want?
Genuine respect between individuals
respect for nature
and for myself, I would like to have enough time and money to do what I believe needs to be done.

SW: Any suggestions you might have for our sweet Rg to improve on your Splashing experience?
Nix: I enjoy this forum, thanks for having us all at your house, mine has too many cats….

SW: Anything special you’d like to say to everyone here?
Nix: Thanks for making me feel at home.

SW: Now its your turn beautiful Splashers and let Nixon know how much you enjoy her friendship and excellent poetry. Not a Splasher? Visit Nixon at the SplashHall Forums Today.
